SR 67 to the North Rim set to reopen

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The Arizona Department of Transportation will be reopening State Route 67 between Jacob Lake and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park on Wednesday, May 15.

ADOT closes SR 67 annually around late November because of heavy snow, even though it is the only road to connect US89A at Jacob Lake up to the North Rim.

Traveling from Flagstaff to the North Rim via US89A is not being impacted by the closure from a landslide damaging the roadway on US 89 south of Page.

The North Rim is at the southern end of the Kaibab Plateau that offers amazing canyon views sitting at roughly 8,500 feet in elevation. Travelers have a 215-mile drive from the South Rim to the North Rim of the canyon. The easiest route for drivers to take when traveling from the South Rim to the North rim is SR 64 east to US 89, US 89 to US 89A, US 89A west to SR 67, then head south on SR 67.

Traveling to the North Rim from Flagstaff is roughly 207 miles, from Phoenix it will be 351 miles, and if you are traveling to the North Rim from Tucson it will be 468 miles.

For all the latest information on highway conditions across Arizona visit ADOT's Travel Information site at http://www.az511.gov.
