The Great Lakes Loons scored five runs in the seventh inning, only to see Fort Wayne rally for three runs in the later innings in a 6-5 Tin Cap victory.
Loons pitcher Miguel Sulbaran (2-1, 5.40 ERA) blew the save and also suffered the loss, throwing two and a third innings. Sulbaran gave up three runs on three hits and also walked two batters.
Roman Madrid (3-0, 0.00 ERA) pitched a scoreless ninth to register the win for the Tin Caps.
The game was played in front of nearly 7,500 people in Fort Wayne.
The teams will pay game two of the series Thursday, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Loons won't return home until May 14, when they'll host the South Bend SilverHawks at Dow Diamond in Midland.
