Delta baseball making history

BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNEM) -

The Delta College baseball team is currently making history as the Pioneers not only qualified for the post-season in just their second year of existence but are 2-0 in regional play.

The Pioneers, 29-18 on the season are coached by Midland native Dan Smith.

Delta entered the regional tournament as the 8th and final seed. They proceeded to beat the #1 seeded Lakeland Community College out of Ohio 2-1 in ten innings on Wednesday behind the arm of Erik Tarbell and AJ McInnis (Saginaw heritage).

On Thursday, Delta rode the arm of Merrill graduate Jimmy Schoof to beat Owens Community College, also of Ohio, to a 3-0 win.

The Pioneers will play perennial power Kellogg Community College at noon on Friday at C.O. Brown stadium for a chance to advance to Saturday's championship game.

The winner of the regional advances to the National Junior College world series in Enid, Oklahoma.
