Another round of layoffs to hit Hemlock Semiconductor

HEMLOCK, MI (WNEM) -

Officials with Hemlock Semiconductor have announced another round of layoffs which they say are a result of continued volatility in the solar polysilicon industry.

HSC said it is laying off 50 employees this week, as well as a number of contractor positions from the company's Hemlock site this week.

The move comes four months after the company laid off 400 employees in Michigan and Tennessee.

"We've had to make a lot of very difficult, but necessary decisions this year to combat the extraordinary forces impacting the polysilicon industry," said Andy Tometich, president of Hemlock Semiconductor.  "We believe through these actions, our Michigan site's staffing is better aligned with the demand we expect in 2013."

Polysilicon is a compound used in the production of solar energy panels.

In January, the maker of polycrystalline silicon said the layoffs were in response to significant oversupply in the polysilicon industry and the threat of potential tariffs on its products sold into China.

In a news release, a company spokesman said impacted employees will be offered a severance package which includes access to health benefits and outplacement services.
