MT. PLEASANT, MI (WNEM) -

For the second consecutive year, Central Michigan University and the Great Lakes Loons baseball team will host a Memorial Day celebration to honor military service members and veterans.

The special ceremony will take place during the Great Lakes Loons vs. Dayton Dragons game starting at 3:05 p.m. May 27.

CMU will sponsor the Memorial Day Great Lakes Loons game in honor of the local military men and women who have served or are currently serving our country. Wavelength, a college quartet from CMU, will open the game by singing "God Bless America."

CMU President George E. Ross will begin the game by throwing out the first pitch along with CMU Cadet Marshall Halas of National City. Halas, a veteran of the Iraq War, is now in his senior year of his undergraduate career at CMU.

There will be a booth for children and their parents to create cards to send to soldiers in the adopted 1460th transportation and 144th military police companies, thanking them for their service to our country.

Requested items for soldiers overseas will be collected through May 24 in West Hall at CMU. West Hall is located on the northwest side of campus just north of Lot 16.

CMU also will be collecting items at Dow Diamond May 27 during the game. Pocket snacks, toiletries, card games, current magazines and blank greeting cards are just a few examples of the types of items that are needed.
