3 of 5 men who ran alleged 'family business' in court Friday
These five men have been charged in connection to the robberies.
FLINT, MI (WNEM) -
Genesee County authorities said five people have been charged in connection with 17 armed robberies stretching over nearly three years.
Three of those five men were due in court Friday.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has just released the details of those charges, which include racketeering.
Albert Read, Albert Read Jr., Ardis Read, Thomas Gatica III and Archie Williams have all been charged.
Leyton said the robberies the group is suspected of committing date back to late 2010 through March of this year. Authorities say the crimes happened in the city of Flint, Flint Township and Mt. Morris. Prosecutors say the group targeted businesses ranging from auto parts stores to pawn shops and banks.
Leyton says the arrest of suspects in a Citizens Bank robbery in Flint Township helped solve the cases.
Leyton says the five defendants, who range in age from 22 to 46, all have something in common.
"This was in essence a family business," explained Leyton to TV5. "Noting that there would be different participants at different times, each robbery was a combination of two or three of these five defendants, who are all related one way or another."
Four of the five are in custody now and police are looking for the fifth, Archie Lee Williams. Their arraignments are being scheduled.
