SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -
There were some scary moments at the Saginaw County Courthouse on Wednesday afternoon.
Police working security at the courthouse entrance stopped and arrested a woman who tried to bring in a loaded pistol.
Officials discovered the handgun in the woman's purse as she was passing through the metal detector.
MLive reports the woman was a convicted felon, and that the gun in question was a .40-caliber semi-automatic. Police are investigating the case.
Deputies say they still don't know why she tried to bring the gun in but her lawyer says she just forgot it was there.
Deputy Brenda Kappan said, "Its pretty hard to get a metal object into the courthouse. While we were here at the security x-ray machine, a law enforcement officer checked a bag through the x-ray machine and it had a gun in it."
Sheriff Bill Federspiel praised his team. Federspiel wonders why she would bring a loaded gun to the courthouse. He also wonders why she was there in the first place when her records reflect the only legal issue she had was an unpaid parking ticket.
The woman, Sherina Parks, was arraigned on five charges, including carrying a concealed weapon and being a felon in possession of a gun. Parks bond was set at $25,000.
She was previously convicted of possessing cocaine in the '90s.
