Police presence expanded for Festirama

Posted: Updated:
SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

There's more to enjoy this year at the St. Joseph Catholic Church's Festirama in Sylvania.

The event is now staged on two sides of Main Street. The rides are still next to the church, but adult activities, such as the beer and food tents, have been moved across the street.

"We wanted to add more rides for the kids and increase the area where we all stand around and enjoy each other's company," said Chairwoman Brenda Boudrie. "It's a great event for our parish and a great gathering for everybody."

Festival-goers will be crossing both sides of Main Street, so there are two designated crosswalks with more Sylvania Police around to keep folks safe and traffic moving.

"They have a higher presence on both sides of the street now," explained Sgt. Josh Seney. "So with the event expanded, we've also expanded our presence."

"We work closely with the safety director of Sylvania and the police department," Boudrie added. "It didn't cost us too much for the little bit of added security."

Thousands are expected for Festirama. Crosswalks are an obvious concern, but police have also mapped out a security plan for the surrounding area.

"Obviously our concern is not just the security of the event, but also the neighborhood and businesses surrounding it," Sgt. Seney said. "We expanded our presence into those zones as well as the park."

Festirama runs through Sunday.
