A 17 year old girl was shot and killed and three others wounded at a pre-prom gathering in Saginaw. The three others that were wounded were all female.

Police say Tonquinisha McKinley was killed in that shooting.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of the Florence Event Hall at Salt and Stewart in Saginaw around 6 p.m. Thursday evening.

TV5's Jonathan Lowe was on the scene and says numerous Saginaw High School students and their parents were taking pictures and gathering prior to the school's prom when shots erupted from the crowd. Police say a fight broke out and that's when shots were fired.

Saginaw and Michigan State Police are investigating.

Officers say an argument led to the shooting and they are looking for multiple shooters.

Saginaw school leaders decided to continue with the prom at the Crooked Creek Banquet Center in Thomas Township, though security was increased.

Superintendent Doctor Carlton Jenkins says he didn't want to cancel the prom because the students who did the right thing by going to the prom shouldn't be punished.

But Jenkins says he is disappointed because McKinley was one of the district's own. reports the prom for Arthur Hill High School is scheduled to take place Friday night at Swan Valley Banquet Center.

Police Sgt. Reggie Williams says students at both schools were previously warned, during a meeting with both schools, not to gather before prom events. These gatherings have proven to be unsafe in the past.
