Jadan Best and Scotty Wheeler are best friends, and both go to kindergarten at Rocky Plains Elementary School.

They were at recess on Wednesday – playing a game about zombies that they invented – when they claim a fox came through a hole in the school's fence and bit them.

"I was by myself, and it started running, and it jumped on me like four feet," Jadan said.

The fox took a chunk out of Jadan's leg and scratched Scotty. Now the boys' mothers, Shakira Mosley and Susan Wheeler, are concerned that Rocky Plains Elementary staff didn't do enough to prevent this from happening. Newton County Animal Control confirmed that it got a report of a fox sighting near the school just the day before.

"I know it was a busy day. I know there was a lot going on, but safety is the no. 1 concern," Wheeler said.

Jadan's mother, Mosley, said the attack has left more than just physical wounds.

"Now he's like terrified," Mosley said. "He's like, ‘Mom, am I going to get bit? Is the fox going to get me if I go back to school?'"

Animal control workers put up traps at the school in hopes of catching the fox. Because authorities haven't found the fox yet, they don't know if it has rabies, so the boys are taking rabies shots as a precaution. Scotty's mother, Susan Wheeler, said the entire series of shots her son needs costs $30,000 and that she'll still have to pay about $10,000 that insurance won't cover. They hope Newton County Schools will help them with the costs.

The last day of school is Friday, and the boys hope to thank a school worker who pulled the fox off of them and saved their lives.
