STARS bus and mini-van crash sending bus into two homes

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

An accident involving a STARS transit bus on Saginaw's east side sent three people to the hospital Friday morning. The bus and a van collided and the bus then crashed into two different houses in the area.

Three people were treated for injuries at an area hospital. The driver of the mini-van was seriously injured. Two passengers on the bus sustained non life-threatening injuries. The driver of the bus was also taken to the hospital to be drug-tested, which is standard procedure in a situation like this. The bus driver was unharmed.

A person in one of the homes was inside of the structure at the time the bus made impact. That person did not suffer injuries. It's unclear if anyone was inside of the other home.

Slyvester Payne is with the Saginaw Transit Authority. He says he has never seen anything like this in his twenty years on the job. "Not an accident where we have actually did physical damage to homes and the bus itself, no", said Payne.

The accident happened near the intersection of Gallagher Street and Sheridan Avenue around 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Consumer's Energy officials were on the scene, responding to a gas leak from one of the homes. Consumer's had to turn off the gas to one of those homes involved.
