House fire in Monitor Township leaves one man dead

Posted: Updated:
MONITOR TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

One man is dead after his Monitor Township home caught fire Sunday morning. Neighbors describe heavy smoke billowing from the front door of the house located on Midland Road.

Firefighters say the blaze was widespread by the time they arrived. Two firefighters went inside to try and rescue the man.

The Monitor Township fire chief believes the man tried to escape through the bedroom window, but the smoke was too much.

"The smoke got to him right away. I'm sure that's what caused his death," said Fire Chief John Kramer.

Officials are still investigating the cause. Midland Road was shut down while crews worked to put the fire out. It is now reopened.
