Mid-Michigan pauses to commemorate Memorial Day

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Memorial Day tributes took place across the area to remember those who gave their lives for their country.

Thousands attended a parade in Saginaw, while others stopped by a service at Hoyt Park.

A 21-gun salute marked the occasion at Veterans Memorial Plaza. Several veterans groups joined local American Legion posts for the ceremony. Wreaths were presented to honor the fallen.

In Bay County, a former Naval destroyer was a fitting location for another ceremony. Several dozen people gathered on the U.S.S. Edson for the first-ever Memorial Day service on the ship. Organizers said they plan to make it an annual event.
