BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Authorities say a U.S. soldier who was on leave and awaiting deployment to Afghanistan has died in a single-vehicle crash in Bay County.

According to deputies, a vehicle carrying three men and two women went off the road on Kawkawlin River Drive in Bangor Township.

Officials with the Bay County Sheriff's Department said Robert Rambo of Bangor Township was killed. They also said the 20-year-old Rambo was a service member. He was stationed in Germany ahead of deployment and was also a 2011 graduate of John Glenn High School.

Investigators said it appears the driver, Brandon Reno, lost control sending the vehicle into a ditch around 12:40 a.m. Sunday. The vehicle, a Pontiac Grand Prix, became air-born, flipped several times and then crashed into a utility pole which knocked down power lines.

Authorities say Rambo's wife was among the injured.

Rambo's wife Cassandra and Reno were airlifted to Covenant Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital. The other two occupants, Leandra Galaviz and Justin Palmer, were transported by ambulance to McLaren in Bay City. They remain in critical condition at last check.

Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash but the incident remains under investigation.
