3 police officers placed on leave following 'incident'
BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -
Three public safety officers in Bay City are now on paid administrative leave pending a criminal and internal investigation.
The incident happened in May and allegedly involves missing property. The officers have been on leave for about six weeks. Chief Michael Cecchini said the officers were placed on leave a few days after the incident on May 2.
Cecchini wouldn't go into specifics but stated that the officers -- Brian K. Ritchey, Don Aldrich, and Keath B. Bartynski -- were not responding to a call.
A citizen filed the initial complaint against the officers at the Bay County Sheriff's Department. Two other sheriff's departments conducted the criminal investigation into the incident, and an internal investigation is also ongoing.
Cecchini said the decision to put the officers on leave was one he didn't take lightly.
"The decision to put any employees, especially three, on administrative leave, is a big decision," said Cecchini. "It impacts operations, we have to back those shifts, and it does cost some overtime."
The criminal investigation is complete and is on the Bay County prosecutor's desk. The internal investigation is expected to be completed by the end of the week.
