Fetus found at pump station had speed, marijuana in system

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

The Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office determined a fetus found at an Independence pump station had speed and marijuana in his system.

The fetus was male and was 20 to 21 weeks old, according to the autopsy report obtained by KCTV5.

The autopsy revealed no evidence of trauma or natural disease. The cause and manner of death was undetermined, according to the medical examiner.

A Independence sewer worker found the male fetus on March 20 while cleaning a grate filter at a sewage pump station. He called 911.

KCTV5 has learned that police believe the mother was a high school student and that the fetus entered the sewage system via a toilet at an Independence high school.

Because of the difficulty in identifying the mother with 100 percent certainty and there was no sign of foul play in the death, the Independence Police Department has closed the case without forwarding the file to the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office, Independence police Officer Tom Gentry said Wednesday.
