Fuel spills at gas station in fuel theft attempt

DETROIT (AP) -

Authorities say hundreds of gallons of gasoline have spilled on the pavement and into the sewer at a Detroit gas station after at least one thief confronted a fuel tanker driver.

WWJ-AM and WDIV-TV report a hazardous materials team is at the station on the city's east side early Friday morning. Police say a man tried to pull a fuel hose out of the driver's hand as he was refilling pumps.

Police say he fled with a gallon of gas. Investigators believe more were involved.

Two men were arrested in the city Wednesday after officers caught them using a siphoning system in the back of a van to steal fuel from a gas station's underground tank. Police spotted the van and a tube stretching into an open tank cover.
