Buena Vista Schools weekend meeting leaves parents frustrated

BUENA VISTA TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

The troubled Buena Vista School District held a brief Saturday meeting, but parents left feeling frustrated.

"I am so upset right now. They're not giving me direct answers. What's going to happen? What avenue should we take?" said parent Mabis Choice.

The school board met to discuss a preliminary state review of school district finances. State officials contend the district is not making progress on a deficit-elimination plan. Board members approved a response to the review.

Board President Randy Jackson said in a letter to the state, "It [the report] paints a grim picture of the financial situation within the district."

The state announced last week it will review the district's finances the first step towards appointing an Emergency Financial Manager.

The letter went on to defend the school district when officials spent $401,962.51 in overpayments from the state.

The meeting only lasted about 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, a local lawmaker is set to meet with leaders in Lansing this week to discuss the ongoing financial situation within the district.

State Representitive Stacey Erwin Oakes from Saginaw will meet with other lawmakers Wednesday at the State Capitol.
