SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
An 8-year-old boy is dead after a passenger tried to grab the steering wheel from the boy's mother, causing the minivan they were in to crash into a light post off a freeway in north Scottsdale on Monday night.
The boy's mother, Kathy Pena Frias, 45, was westbound on the Loop 101 Pima Freeway about 11 p.m. when a man riding in the passenger seat grabbed the steering wheel, said Bart Graves of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The mother lost control and the van careened off the freeway into the pole just past the Hayden Road exit in north Scottsdale.
Graves said the man and woman were taken to a Scottsdale hospital for treatment of their injuries, though they were expected to survive.
Grave said he didn't know if there was any relationship between the man and woman.
"It's a sad set of circumstances," Graves said. "We do have two survivors who can tell us what happened. That's not always the case in a crash like this."
He said the investigation would continue.
The crash closed Loop 101 until just after 4 a.m. Tuesday.
