Heavy rains could cause localized flooding...again

Posted: Updated:

Just yesterday we saw road closures in Spartanburg county due to isolated flooding, as strong storms with downpours swept across the area.  With a low pressure system and associated cold front lingering nearby through Tuesday, we're expecting to see more of the same.  Around 10am, heavy rains already moved into our counties in Western NC, as well as a pocket of heavy rain into Abbeville and Greenwood counties.  This first wave will continue to move through during the morning hours, though the front remains to our west until later this afternoon.  In advance of the front, expect a few peeks of sunshine in between the storms to interact with our already humid air, building instability and allowing thunderstorms to develop throughout the afternoon.  Pockets of very heavy rain in excess of 1" at a time in spots could trigger more flooding, so keep an eye on streams, creeks, and ponding on the roads.  Within each storm, we also expect to see brief gusty winds and cloud to ground lightning.  The soggy ground combined with the wind could cause a few trees to fall.  Once the front passes early this evening, expect conditions to begin to improve.
