MIDLAND COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The Midland County Sheriff's Office is investigating a two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Gladwin County woman, severely injured her husband and resulted in minor injuries to a 16-year-old female driver.

The crash took place on a curved stretch of north M-30 near the intersection of Meridian Road in Midland County's Edenville Township around 7:40 p.m. on June 17.

Based on the sheriff's investigation and witness statements at the scene, it appears that the teen, Jenna Owens, from Midland, was southbound in a 1996 GMC Yukon on M-30 going around a curve in the roadway when she lost control of her vehicle on the wet roads, and traveled into the northbound lane of traffic. Owens vehicle struck a south bound traveling 2012 Ford Escape driven by Mary Swinehart, 60, and occupied by her 63-year-old husband Bennett Swinehart, both of Gladwin.

All three people involved with the incident were transported to the Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Midland.

Authorities said Mary Swinehart was pronounced dead from her injuries at Mid-Michigan Medical Center. Police said Bennett Swinehart remains hospitalized with serious injuries, and his exact condition is unknown.

Midland County Sheriff Scott Stephenson said in a news release that Jenna Owens received minor injuries in the crash. She was treated and released.

Stephenson said the crash remains under investigation pending toxicology and other reports. The final report will then be forwarded to the Midland County Prosecutor's Office upon completion.
