Police charge man with operating a drug factory in a hotel room

PLAINFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

State police arrested a Canterbury man at a hotel after officers said he was found in possession of a large amount of drugs.

Officers located 22-year-old Derek Barrett at the Knights Inn on East Main Street in Plainfield around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers were looking to serve Barrett with a warrant for cultivation of marijuana as a result of an investigation in April at his Canterbury home. Police said they located more than three pounds of marijuana packaged for sale.

When officers located Barrett at the hotel, they said they found him in possession of several narcotics, including more than 14 grams of heroin and 200 grams of marijuana, both packaged for sale. In addition, officers located scales, packaging material and a stun gun, along with more than $2,000 in cash.

Barrett was additionally charged with operating a drug factory, possession of heroin with intent to sell, possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of an electronic stun gun.

He is being held on a $55,000 bond and will be arraigned in Danielson Superior Court on Wednesday.
