Thousands to gather in Lansing in support of public schools

LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

Thousands are expected to gather at the state capitol rallying to get more support for public schools.

State Representative Stacey Erwin Oakes says she will be attending.

Many are upset of a new package of bills that would allow the state to dissolve financially troubled districts, including Buena Vista schools.

The bills have already been approved by the House and the state Senate is expected to vote on them later this week.

The rally is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday outside the capitol building in Lansing. The state board of education is giving its input on those troubled schools bills.

The board suggests placing realistic timelines in the proposals to dissolve districts.

The board also suggests that there be due process that allows local districts and intermediate school districts to dispute any findings.

The bills would let the state shutdown any district that doesn't come up with a deficit elimination plan.

Meanwhile, the Saginaw school board could vote Wednesday on next year's budget.

The budget calls for the layoff of more than 30 teachers and other staff to eliminate a six and a half million dollar budget gap.

The public will have one more opportunity to give their thoughts and reactions during the 7 p.m. board meeting.
