Man makes sure to evacuate with classic cars

Posted: Updated:
PRESCOTT, AZ (CBS5) -

Hundreds of people had to evacuate their homes because of the Doce Wildfire near Prescott. And while most families are leaving with important prescriptions, documents and family pictures, Jack Howerton made sure to head to his garage and get his classic cars ready to go.

"I was race car driving when I was young," said Howerton, explaining why he has such a passion for cars.

Now that he's a little older, he likes to restore and build custom hot rods. So when Howerton saw the flames less than a mile from his home, he knew he had to leave.

"Last night there were a lot of flames," he said.

He didn't take time packing important documents or photos. Rather, Howerton got behind the wheel of one of his vintage vehicles and drove away. With the help of neighbors, he was able to bring all of his vehicles a safe distance away from the flames.

"I was afraid that if something happened maybe they'd let us leave but not come back, so I'd only be able to take one car," he said.

The Doce Wildfire has burned more than 7,500 acres. No homes or injuries have been reported.
