River Roar roars into Bay City

Posted: Updated:

The boats are in, the carnival is up and running, and the weekend is shaping up to be a good one in Bay City.

"We're usually down here for the races, the festival and things like that, so we love it because it's so close, and it brings a lot of people to the city, so I think it's great overall," said Bay City resident Eric Beson.

Beson and his family look forward to the River Roar weekend every year, and he calls it the city's official kickoff to summer. And this year for the first time, families like the Besons won't have to pay to watch the races because admission is free.

"I think it's great that it's free. Nobody has to spend any extra cash. Everyone's strapped right now, so you can bring your family, something that you actually enjoy doing, being outside," Beson said.

Racers like Dalyce Beegle, who owns a F1 racing boat that tops out at around 130 mph, said she's glad to always see the excitement when she comes to Bay City.

"The biggest thing is getting more people out here because when people are able to see it, and see the excitement, and the adrenaline and how much fun it is," said Beegle.

Her husband will be racing the no. 99 boat this weekend. She said this is her favorite race because she's from the area.

"All of my family gets to come up and see my husband race, and all the sponsors get to come, so we just end up with so many people here," Beegle said.

Businesses are also looking forward to this year. Timothy Socier owns Timothy's Fine Cigars, and he said the foot traffic and the money spent make this one of the bigger weekends of the year.

"Free admission this year, it's going to bring a lot more people downtown. They're doing more things on the east side of the river, which is going to help us. It's going to be a great year," Socier said.
