CPD officer's gun discharges during confrontation at traffic stop

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

The Cleveland Police Department's Use of Deadly Force Investigation Team is investigating after an officer's gun discharged during a traffic stop early Sunday morning in the Warehouse District.

The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of W. 6th and St. Clair Avenue.

Police say a 5-year veteran of the force confronted a 28-year-old male who was attempting to drive down a closed street.

During the confrontation, the officer's service weapon discharged once striking the male in the chest.

The driver was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center where he was treated and released.  Police say he was made a "named suspect" in connection with this incident.
 
The UDF Team will interview the officer and all witnesses to the incident, including a review of all available surveillance video.

People who live in the Warehouse district say this officer involved shooting along with a deadly shooting that happened just hours before on W. 3rd doesn't shake their feelings of safety here.

"I don't think it had any effect whatsoever.  These incidents happen everywhere.  It doesn't matter if it's a suburb or a city," says Paulius Nasbytis.

The officer was no injured in the incident and will be placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.
