Friends and family hold fundraiser to raise money for severely-injured man

Posted: Updated:

When the temperatures get warmer, garage sales start popping up more and more, but one specific garage sale is extra special.

All the money raised will go toward helping a local Kansas City, KS, man literally get back on his feet.

Kevin Glenn's attitude remains positive despite his setbacks. He believes he will be OK as long as he keeps pushing himself.

"I got a long way to go, but I'm getting there. I'm not going to give up," he said.

On April 28 Glenn was helping a neighbor move when a 250-pound piece of farming equipment fell on him, breaking his neck and severely injuring his spinal cord.

"They said one inch the other way and I would have died at the scene, so I'm here for a reason," he said.

Glenn's not overcoming his struggles alone.

"He's got an amazing spirit. Such a fighter, an inspiration. Everybody is standing and watching him in awe of everything he's doing," family friend Johann Zatar said.

Family and friends organized a special garage sale this weekend at the New Life Family Church, located at 4835 Shawnee Dr. in Kansas City, KS, to help Glenn, his wife Connie and their two children.

"It's actually overwhelming and it's great that so many people love us and care about us. It makes it a little easier to know we have all this support," Connie Glenn said.

Kevin Glenn was insured so money coming in will help with medical bills and getting his home ready for his return on July 9.

"(We'll need to) build a ramp to get in and out of the house with a walker, (get) new furniture, a new bed that he will be able to get out of a little easier," said Kathy Glenn, Kevin's sister.

Kevin Glenn said he's thankful for the University of Kansas Hospital staff helping him every step of the way. He said he hopes his journey to recovery will encourage other spinal cord injury patients that their future may have changed, but it's still a bright one.

"That no matter how bad your situation is, every day try to wake up and put a smile on. Fight through the day," he said.

The garage sale runs through Saturday.

Organizers are also putting together a Ride for Rehab. It will be Saturday, July 20. Suggested donations for the ride are $20 for single motorcyclists, $30 for couple motorcycle riders and $15 per car. The registration begins at 11 a.m. that morning and it will start at noon.
