Valley Metro: East Valley bus riders warned of looming strike

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Valley Metro is advising east Valley bus riders to consider alternate travel plans as a possible strike looms Monday.

Valley Metro officials said they remained hopeful that a labor agreement can be reached between First Transit, the bus operator for the east Valley and ATU 1433, the bus operator union.

If a work stoppage occurs, it would affect seven local and nine commuter bus routes serving Phoenix. The other 52 bus routes, local and commuter, serving Phoenix will continue service.

Phoenix has posted a map, a list of the potentially impacted bus routes and alternate routes and options in Phoenix at http://phoenix.gov/publictransit/index.html.

The potentially impacted Valley Metro routes travel from the east Valley into southern and central Phoenix, Ahwatukee, and along the Phoenix border with Scottsdale carrying about 6,800 Phoenix riders each day.

All bus service in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa and Tempe would be affected should a strike occur. Routes impacted are: FLASH, MERCURY, VENUS, EARTH, MARS, JUPITER, BUZZ, LINK-Main Street, LINK-Arizona Avenue, 30, 40, 45, 48, 56, 61, 62, 65, 66, 72, 77, 81, 96, 104, 108, 112, 120, 128, 136, 156, 184, 511, 514, 520, 521, 522, 531, 533, 535, 541 and 542.

There are routes traveling into Phoenix (30, 45, 56, 61, 72, 77, 514, 520, 521, 522, 531, 533, 535, 541, 542) and Scottsdale (72, 81, 511, 514) that would also be affected should a strike occur.

Phoenix city buses would still continue service on Valley Metro routes operated by the city of Phoenix and its contractors and may be able to provide an alternate way to a passenger's destination.

Light rail service is not affected by the possible strike; trains will continue to operate regular service. Passengers may want to consider purchasing All-Day passes instead of multi-day passes. No fare refunds or reimbursements are available if there is a loss of service due to a strike.

Southern Phoenix bus routes may see the greatest impact with a possible loss on Broadway, Southern and Baseline roads.
