Gov. Rick Snyder to sign troubled school district bill

LANSING, MI (WNEM/AP) -

Gov. Rick Snyder is expected to sign a bill aimed at protecting the education of students in troubled districts.

The governor will hold a press conference Tuesday, July 2 at 3:45 p.m.

The legislation would allow state officials to dissolve deficit-ridden school districts and send the students to nearby schools.

The bills would primarily address two struggling districts in the Detroit and Saginaw areas. TV5 has reported on the ongoing financial crisis in Buena Vista Schools. At one point the district ran out of money and shut down for two weeks.

Lawmakers moved quickly because the Buena Vista and Inkster districts might not have enough money to reopen for classes in September.

The legislation lets the state school superintendent and state treasurer dissolve a district with 300 to 2,400 students if certain criteria are met.
