CARROLL TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -
People living near the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant in Carroll Township, Ohio, describe hearing a loud noise Saturday night, similar to an airplane landing.
It turns out that noise was from an incident at the power station, in which a reactor cooling pump failed, causing the plant to automatically shut down.
A First Energy spokesman says there were no radiological releases, and there were no challenges to worker or public health and safety. One of the site's four reactor coolant pumps quit working, and the company says at no time did it have a problem getting adequate cooling to the reactor.
Ron Rose has a condo near the plant, but he's not worried about the situation.
"I have no problem at all being next door to this nuclear plant," he said. "It's the least of my worries."
The company says the plant is in a safe and stable shut down condition as workers try to figure out what went wrong. An issue with the electrical wiring to the pump motor has been identified and will be repaired.
The NRC says the plant is on hot standby and its resident inspector has been notified. First Energy will not release when the plant is expected to return to service for competitive reasons.
