A Saginaw teenager placed fourth in commercial baking at the SkillsUSA Championship in Kansas City, Mo.
The Saginaw News reports that 17-year-old Maria Buko competed against 57 other high school and college students in the six-hour baking competition on June 27. She will be a senior in fall at Nouvel Catholic Central High School and Saginaw Career Complex
Career Complex teacher Aaron Gaertner says judges were especially impressed with Buko's bread. He is impressed with the fourth place finish since it comes in her first year in a culinary program.
Buko hopes to earn a scholarship to the Culinary Institute of America in New York and also wants to compete in the national contest again next year.
Gaertner predicts she will one day open her own bakery.
