TUSCOLA COUNTY, MI (WNEM+AP) -

Officials say a Tuscola County woman was dead for several hours before a shootout with officers at a home that killed her husband.

Tucsola County Prosecutor Mark Reene said 54-year-old Donnieca Ann Garcia died from a single gunshot wound inside the home on Van Geisen Road in Gilford Township.

Officers responding to a 911 call about her death Thursday found 53-year-old James Garcia, who they say came out of the home and started shooting.

Police say they returned fire, killing James Garcia. A sheriff's deputy was shot in his bullet-resistant vest and treated for what were described as minor injuries. He was released a short time following the shooting from Covenant Hospital in Saginaw.

State police are investigating and autopsies were performed on the couple on Sunday. Details from the autopsies hasn't been released yet. The two sheriff's deputies and a Caro police officer involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave.

Police say they're working to confirm how Donnieca Garcia was shot. Another relative called 911.
