Franklin group plans $80 million hotel, redevelopment project

FRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) -

Changes could be coming to downtown Franklin in the form of an $80 million project built around a boutique hotel.

Planners and investors are expected to reveal more details Tuesday in their proposal that would redevelop an entire city block from 1st Avenue North to 2nd Avenue North between Bridge Street and East Main.

The plans call for a 120-room hotel, 200-unit condo building, about 40,000 square feet of retail space and 500 parking spaces on five acres of land.

"This is a very historic area. This is where the bridge over the Harpeth is located, which was important in the Battle of Franklin. But it is an area with great potential," said developer Rod Heller.

Investors say they will keep four historic buildings, including the Old Franklin Store, which stood during the Battle of Franklin and now houses Landmark Booksellers.

Planners hope to break ground by next spring, but the city has not voted yet to approve the project.

Heller and business partner Jay Franks were scheduled to meet with the community Tuesday at the Franklin Theater to answer questions about the development.
