Man tries to steal service dog off a bus

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police are looking for the man who tried to steal a woman's service dog off a bus.

TARTA surveillance video shows a man grabbing the leash Arrica Okenka's service dog while the bus is stopped, and attempting to take the dog off the bus.

"At first, I thought maybe it was an accident," Okenka said. "[Like] he had just caught the leash."

Okenka said she soon realized the man was trying to take her dog, and she held onto the leash so tight, her hand started bleeding.

"What would he have done with her?" she asked. "I don't even want to think about it, that's why I had such a death grip on her, I wasn't letting her go."

Okenka says her 5-year-old Golden Retriever, Ingrid, is not just a companion, but a necessity. Okenka was diagnosed at birth with cerebral palsy. She is wheelchair bound, but Ingrid helps her pick up things, close doors, and even get dressed.

"She's my best friend," she said. "You know that statement that they say: A dog is a person's best friend? It really, really applies to her."

Now Okenka is just hoping the man gets caught.

"Maybe the judge can make him train dogs for other handicap people," she said.

Police are asking anyone that recognizes the man to call Crimestopper at 419-255-1111.
