Hundreds gathered at the Caddo Parish Courthouse the "Rally for Justice," in the name of Trayvon Martin.
An estimated 400 people gathered at the Caddo Parish Courthouse, Saturday, to "Rally for Justice," in the name of Trayvon Martin.
Poems, sermons, and speeches of unity echoed for blocks around the Caddo Parish Courthouse. Eric Gadson was at the rally and told KSLA this has nothing to do with race, "This is not a white thing. This is not a black thing. This is a whole nation thing. People killing each other over foolishness and those who get off scott free for it, hey, that's injustice.
Jeffery Brooks also attended the rally and says, as a nation, we need to focus on a bigger picture and ask ourselves what we can do to make a change, "the reality of it is we have more black on black crime than any other crime. So we always have to say, what can we do to progress and do more. Reach out to your local N.A.A.C.P. Or your local action networks to voice your opinion, get registered to vote."
And Shreveport N.A.A.C.P. President Lloyd Thompson says gun violence is a huge issue right here in Shreveport and it must end, "what I'm saying is that we need to stop the gun violence no matter what color it is cause we need to get justice for those who have been shot down, stabbed, or whatever violence it is."
Organizers say they don't want the fight for justice to stop on the steps of the courthouse. They want you to take it into your homes, take it into your neighborhoods, and take it to your legislatures for your voice to be heard, "we need to lobby our legislatures, lobby our senators, and say, look at the stand your ground law and see how it affects our community and see what we can do to either take out, add in, or make it better used. I'm not against folks toting a gun. I'm not against folks protecting their homes."
Thompson says the problem he does have is innocent people being killed through unnecessary violence and hopes that law makers will come up with a plan to battle this growing problem. So far in 2013, there have been 16 homicides in Shreveport.
