Some Bay City residents still waiting for power to be restored

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Bay City streets are still littered with debris.

Throughout the southern portion of the city, the storm that ripped through the area Friday night crippled the city's power system.

"It's no fun. No fans, no TV's, nothing," said resident Kathy Hite.

Hite said she's sick of being in the dark. She's in one of the areas where the power's yet to be restored as of Monday night.

"I'm not happy with it. They should have had it on by now. I called the city last night. They said they were out there working. City trucks drove by my house 10 times last night, just driving around," said Hite.

But if you talk to the guys trying to get the power back on, they said they're working around the clock.

Brett Schmidt is one of the many workers brought in from across the state to help get the power restored.

"Past couple of days have been 20 hours. We quit about midnight last night, still got our 20 in though, and today, it's probably looking about the same," said Schmidt, who is an employee with the Grand Haven Board of Power and Light.

Schmidt said crews work on the hardest-hit areas first. Janie Smith also lacked power on Monday night, but she said she's not mad; in fact, she said she commends the effort.

"Well, I tell you what, I'm very glad to see them here working, and it makes me feel good, and it looks like the end might be in sight," said Smith. "Lots of credit, they're here and they're working hard."

As of Monday night, about 1,500 customers of Bay City Electric, Light and Power remained without power. Crews hope to have the majority of power restored by Thursday.
