HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

If you live in Hillsborough County, it's time to talk trash. Beginning next week, the county will start delivering new trash carts and recycle carts, moving from an all hands on system to an automated one.

It's a major undertaking for the county. The 95 gallon garbage bins and 65 gallon recycle bins will start going out August 1.

The gray roll carts for garbage and blue roll carts for recycling will go out to more than 260,000 homes, total of 520,000 carts set for delivery.

"We're making the transition because we believe this is an investment in the community," said Kim Byer with Hillsborough County.

Byer said the change from a manual system, in which garbage collectors physically lift cans, to a new automated system is safer for the drivers and for everyone involved. She said, for one thing, there's now a reduced risk of drivers being hit by cars, because they won't have to leave the truck.

"The solid waste collection is the 10th most dangerous occupation in the United States, this take these guys that are behind the truck, putting them in the trucks and out of harms way," Byer said.

Then there's the issue of what to do with your current garbage can. Ironically you can't just throw it away. The county is working on a plan for that.

In the new garbage system, there will be no more separating recyclables, everything will go into one cart. And they will accept more for recycling.

"It's a cleaner system and more convenient because now everything goes in one cart in your recycling," Byer said. "In addition it rolls to the curb, rather than rolling out a heavy garbage can now these can be rolled to the curb."

But you won't be able to use the containers right away. The actual service doesn't start until late September. Though collection days and service providers may change, you will still have two garbage pickups every week, one recycling collection every week, and one yard waste collection every week.

You can learn more about the new service by logging on to www.hillsboroughcounty.org.
