SANFORD, MI (WNEM) -

Sylvia Steinberg said she came face to face with a bear last week while walking along the rail trail near her home in Sanford.

"It stood up and looked at me," Steinberg explained.

The Sanford resident said she froze for a few seconds and then suddenly remembered what her grandmother taught her when the two used to pick berries together.

"It just kicked in ... she told me 'Don't run because then it will think you are prey,'" she said.

Barry Sova, with the Department of Natural Resources, said Steinberg reacted perfectly to a very scary situation.

"She did what she was supposed to do ... she made noise ... and walked back without turning around," he explained.

Steinberg says there are lots of children who walk and ride their bikes on the trail.

She said she wanted to make sure they are extra careful.

"They should not go alone to the areas of the trail where bears have been seen," Steinberg said.
