The former vice mayor of Chandler has been arrested on disorderly conduct charges stemming from an incident involving a weapon.
Lowell Huggins, 70, nearly took his own life after he argued with his wife about money, a court document stated.
Police said he told his wife to call 911, grabbed a gun and walked to the back part of their property.
While his wife was on the phone, she said she heard a gunshot, the document stated.
A short time later, Huggins reappeared and told his wife he had just tried to kill himself.
When police tried to arrest him, he refused to be handcuffed. After a brief struggle, officers took him into custody.
Huggins told officer he was unarmed, but officers said they found a loaded Derringer-type handgun in his front pants pocket.
Huggins left his final term in office in 2009.
