Family celebrates 30 years of the American dream

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

One local businessman has been putting smiles on the faces of his customers for three decades, even with holes throughout his products.

Bill Vogiatzis came from Greece about 30 years ago, and has been making donuts in the Glass City ever since.

"I love this store," Vogiatzis said of his shop, Café Donuts. "I'm happy to wake up and to come here."

As a young man helping to run a butcher shop in a small village in Greece, Vogiatzis dreamed of coming to the United States. When he got his chance at the age of 30, he and his wife Angie moved to Toledo.

"It was one of our great opportunities, coming to USA. It was a dream," Angie said. "This is the country that gave us opportunities for dreams to come true."

After 30 years, Bill and his family still make the donuts themselves by hand, and they've sprinkled in so many memories watching their family grow alongside the business.

"My kids have been working with us ever since they were young," Angie said. "They were not even able to reach over the counter when we [started] making donuts."

And the patrons have really been the icing on the donut.

"I appreciate my customers," Vogiatzis said. "From one penny, to thousands, they give me."

Vogiatzis says one of the best things about the shop is that he's been able to watch young kids grow up and then bring their kids in to get donuts.
