A veteran dispatcher for Connecticut State Police helped talk a father through the process of delivering a baby, who was unable to make the hospital when the mother went into labor on the side of Interstate 91 in Hartford.

It was not the first time for the dispatcher has helped a soon-to-be father deliver a baby.

State police received an emergency call from Curt Walker, who said his pregnant wife, Natalie Walker, was about to give birth and he was pulled over near Exit 27 on I-91.

Dispatcher Paula Freeman took the call and talked the father through the process. And within minutes, 6 pounds 5 ounces Rian Madison Walker was born.

Freeman urged Curt Walker to wrap the newborn in a blanket or shirt to keep warm.

An ambulance arrived a short time later and took the three of them to St. Francis Hospital where they rested Friday night surrounded by flowers and balloons.

Freeman has been through this process before, state police said. During her 27-year career, she has helped soon-to-be fathers deliver babies three times.

"Dispatcher Freeman did an outstanding job calming the situation and giving directions as the delivery progressed," said Lt. Ed Bednarz, who is the commanding officer of state police troop in Hartford.

On July 21, 2001, Freeman helped an unidentified man at his Manchester home deliver his baby girl.

State police said Freeman used information from their response book to assist in the process and would later receive Commissioner's Recognition Award.

By the way, the Walkers told Eyewitness News Friday's birth is a big difference from their firstborn. Their son took 10 hours to make an appearance into the world two years ago.
