SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover has issued a statement disputing rumors surrounding his noticeable weight loss since his hospitalization last year.
Here is the full statement, released late Friday afternoon:
Contrary to rumors and hearsay, Mayor Cedric Glover did not undergo gastric bypass or any other weight-reduction surgery during his lengthy hospitalization last year.
Mayor Glover had surgery on Oct. 15, 2012, to repair damage done to both legs during an Oct. 3, 2012, fall at a local elementary school. The catastrophic nature of his injuries and other factors ultimately contributed to the length of his hospital stay. However, no other invasive procedure was either required or performed during that period.
"I understand that all citizens are legally entitled to privacy when it comes to health-related issues, but I also understand the need for me to continue my campaign of transparency,'' Mayor Glover said. ``Since there are a vocal few who insist on perpetuating this particular concern about my health, in some misguided effort to suggest I'm not healthy enough to perform my duties as Mayor, I want to put these rumors about the gastric bypass to rest. I respect those who have had such procedures but in my case, it simply didn't happen.''
A local attorney today posted a lengthy column online suggesting Mayor Glover's noticeable weight loss was due to an invasive surgical procedure, discounting official statements about his health as either false or misleading. The post appears on a website that promotes itself as an advocate for protecting the public's right to know when it comes to affairs of local and regional government.
This same column, however, was also rejected by one weekly newspaper.
In an email forwarded on Wednesday, July 24, to Mayor Glover, Danny Lawler, publisher of The Inquisitor, shared his decision not to run the column, telling the writer "That crosses the line and is nobody's business, even if it is true. I think you should be complimentary of that. He looks great and I'm sure he is changed person because of it. Does it really matter how he lost it? Seriously? At least he has done it and we should be proud of him.''
No City of Shreveport business was neglected and Mayor Glover did not miss any regular city council meetings during his stay at Christus Schumpert. He participated in those meetings via conference call and conducted additional conference calls on other issues as well. He also was briefed daily on city business and was regularly supplied with contracts and other documents that required his signature.
"I largely see this as a distraction to move us away from the critical, important issues that we need to address, such as our need to continue fixing our streets and addressing our other infrastructure needs,'' Glover said. "There is no conspiracy to uncover about my health and the only deception at work here is by those who suggest they only have the public's best interest at heart -- and, of course, my good health.''
Mayor Glover this week also received an email request from KTBS 3 news anchor/reporter Gerry May for an on-camera interview to "clear up talk around town and online'' regarding his leg injuries and purported bariatric surgery. That email request included speculation that Mayor Glover's fall and subsequent injuries were "fabricated to cover the bariatric surgery.''
"I suffered horrifically debilitating injuries to my legs,'' Mayor Glover said. "Thanks to the unwavering love and support of my wife, family, friends and medical team, I'm getting better and stronger every day. But if you really want to fully understand what's happened, look at God.''
