New trend in outdoor furniture

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

School will be starting soon and the weather will eventually be cooling off.  In just a few weeks more people will be heading outdoors to enjoy the backyard.

This fall there is a new trend taking place when it comes to outdoor furniture.

Robin Rodriguez from Today's Patio Furniture and Decor said that over the past year and a half fewer people want their furniture with the old world or Tuscan style.

"I think more people are gravitating more towards simple, cleaner lines.  Not necessarily contemporary or modern but just something that's not going to be as scrolly or fussy.  Just very simple ."

Bright colors are also very popular, according to Rodriguez.

"The whole aqua blue as been a big theme and I think a lot of people are wanting more color verses just the real desert colors."

Rodriguez also had some tips on how to take care of any outdoor furniture for the rest of summer.

She said it's important to cover any outside chairs until the middle of September. A lot of people don't use their furniture but just forget to cover it up.

Also, wicker furniture is a slightly cooler option when it comes to buying furniture because it doesn't warm up as quickly as iron chairs and sofas.

Rodriguez said to always tie down your umbrella during the monsoon season because winds can pick up fast.

"All the umbrella companies, they're not warranted under high winds and there's a lot of people that just like to leave them up and then they'll be in to buy a new one," said Rodriguez.

More and more people want fireplaces, even in the heat of the summer. Rodriguez says it can substitute as a table because people still can sit around it and eat food while they enjoy their backyard.

For those who want to have a new look but don't want to invest in new furniture, new, brightly colored throw pillows can go a long way.
