Local community teams up to donate bikes

MIDLAND COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The Midland Police Department is teaming up with Tri-City Cycling to give bikes to people in need.

"Recycle A Bike" has donated over 1,000 bikes since the program started six years ago.

"People donate bikes to us and we fix them up and give them to kids that need them and a lot of adults that don't have other transportation," said Recycle A Bike Coordinator Chuck McCourt.

Now the Midland Police are helping out by donating all the bikes they find or recover on the job.

"This is a good opportunity for the department give back to the community if we can't find the owners then we can at least make some good use out of these bikes and get them to people who really need them," said Officer Dan Keeler.

McCourt says the Police Department's help will allow his organization to provide even more people with a free bike who otherwise would go without.

"It just shows they care about others in the community," said McCourt.
