Martial arts helping kids stay away from stranger danger

Posted: Updated:
MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

There's a new way for kids to deal with stranger danger: martial arts.

They're learning moves and actions on how to deal with potential dangerous situations at a special class in Maumee.

And no, we're not talking breaking bones or cracking heads.

That would be dangerous and wrong.

But kids are being taught simple moves to take care of themselves, defend themselves and build confidence in a stranger danger situation.

"The worst thing that can happen is for there to be physical contact, because most of the time that there's physical contact, it means the kids violated the 'no, go, yell, tell' principle," said instructor Joe Hurtsellers.

And that's the emphasis of the class at the Martial Arts Center in Maumee: 'no, go, yell, tell.'

Here's how it works.

"It's really important that the child say no. Second rule is go, which means they run away as quickly as they can. The third rule is that they yell. The fourth rule is to tell, make sure they tell a parent," said Mr. Hurtsellers.

Little Geneveve Stanfield says it's a lesson she'll never forget.

"Because it helps you if a stranger actually tries to take you and kidnap you," said Geneveve.

"It's wonderful with motivation. Lots of parents and I were sitting, talking about how it's something the kids benefit from tremendously," said Geveveve's mom Della.

And something the folks at the center plan to continue teaching as the new school year approaches.
