WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A video that went viral Wednesday of a decapitated copperhead snake attacking itself was not well-received by the owner of a popular snake shop in Wilmington.

"It's pretty cruel I would say and it looked to me like she was pregnant as well," said Dean Ripa, owner of the Cape Fear Serpentarium.

The video generated millions of clicks on the internet.

Ripa, along with a live copperhead snake, appeared on WECT News at 11 Wednesday night to explain how the reptile can still attack even it's head has been chopped off.

"The neurology of snakes is distributed throughout the body," Ripa says. "It's not all in the brain. He knows things in his body."

Ripa says people should be careful when killing any snake but points out that rattlesnakes are far more venomous than copperheads. He adds copperheads are here to stay.

"You can kill them all day long but you'll never get to the end of them. There are at least 17 million copperheads running free in the state of North Carolina right now," said Ripa.
