Legacy Traditional School at 3500 W. Cortaro Road was locked down during the search.
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
The parents of an 8-year-old girl who was reported missing and unaccounted for three hours this morning have withdrawn their daughter from the school.
Legacy Traditional School at 3500 W. Cortaro Road was locked down during the search which ended when the girl was found in her third grade classroom.
Her parents said that although the school's response and actions taken were correct, the fact that she was mistakenly reported missing was reason enough to pull her from the school.
"Stuff does happen and I think that people did rally," says the little girl's mother Jennifer Fernandez. "They locked the school down and did things they needed to do. But something as simple as the child sitting in her damn desk. You know, she wasn't in the bathroom, she wasn't in the hallway, she wasn't out in the playground. She was at her desk the whole time -- and that's something hard to just forget."
According to the Pima County Sheriff's Department, the girl was unaccounted for after being dropped off by her mother at 7:20 a.m. She was found at 10:45 a.m.
The school called her parents within the hour after attendance was taken to report that she was missing.
At least two dozen deputies were called to the scene for the search for the girl, who is new to the school.
We attempted to seek comment from Legacy Traditional School officials and were directed to Legacy headquarters in Phoenix. As of 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, we still hadn't heard back from anyone.
