KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
City Council members are considering noise restrictions to curb brakes that some big rig drivers use.
Jacob Vehicle Systems, or Jake brakes, are used by truck drivers to slow down their trucks. The goal is to save wear and tear on their regular brakes.
"Owner operators especially like them because it's less maintenance than getting new brakes put on," Metropolitan Community College instructor John Malicoat said.
But the brakes are annoying to some, especially those at businesses in the West Bottoms, which are near two area interstates.
"This is something that could be potentially put into use in more highway areas in the Kansas City area," said Sean Demory, a spokesman for the city. "It's something that is seen as being a pretty significant nuisance, and is something that is relatively easy to control."
Jake brake bans are fairly common especially in cities.
The council's neighborhood committee will discuss a proposed ordinance at noon.
