Four men and one woman who were the target of a large-scale drug raid on Wednesday have been tied to a July 29 shooting that left two people wounded, Phoenix police said.
Detectives from the Phoenix Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations served federal search warrants at 3525 W. Quail Track Dr. and 10142 W. Monterosa St.
The suspects were involved in narcotics trafficking and were investigative leads in the apartment shooting four weeks ago, said Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump.
Two people suffered multiple gunshot wounds. They were rushed to a local hospital and both of them recovered.
When police arrived at the apartment at 621 N. 30th Place, they saw a vehicle had crashed into a fence surrounding the property. The vehicle was abandoned but officers found an assault rifle in the front passenger area.
Witnesses said they saw the vehicle speeding in reverse through the parking lot just after the shots were fired and crash backwards into the fence. Several people were seen running in various directions from the complex.
The front windows and door of the apartment had multiple bullet strikes and empty rifle bullet casings were discovered on the ground in the courtyard in front of the apartment, Crump said. Officers entered the apartment and saw a handgun on the ground in the front living room.
During Wednesday's narcotics raid, police found numerous rifles and handguns during the service of the warrants, along with substantial amounts of illegal drugs and packaging materials, Crump said.
The suspects were arrested. They are identified as Kayonte Scott, 19; Jonathan Mejinez-Sanchez, 20; Jovanny Andrade, 22; Bruno Brizuela, 18; and Mayra Miranda.
Four of the suspects were booked into jail on two counts of attempted homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of shooting into an occupied structure and first-degree burglary. The fifth suspect had an outstanding felony warrant for drug charges.
