A man was hospitalized after his neighbor and best friend shot him in the eye, and, by all accounts, it was just a terrible accident.
Investigators said a man was cleaning his brand new gun at a duplex in Cheatham County when the gun accidentally fired.
A .44 caliber bullet traveled through a wall and struck the victim, James Kratz, right in the eye as he sat in his recliner eating breakfast.
We're told the man responsible for the accident is so remorseful he is now getting rid of all of his guns, and deputies hope other gun owners learn from his mistake.
"Like we always say, always treat a weapon as being loaded," said Cheatham County Sheriff's Investigator Travis Walker. "Keep it pointed in the right direction, make sure the weapon is empty. But, first of all when you buy a new weapon, make sure you're familiar with it."
The victim has endured one surgery so far, and he may lose his eye.
His wife said they won't let this accident come between them and their neighbor.
